Email Marketing is Dead…Long Live Email Marketing

"Every week I hear or read the social media battle cry: Email Marketing is Dead. A 21 year-old on snapchat? Maybe. Otherwise...here's why it's bullshit..."

Almost every week I read a story, post or blurb on social media all claiming the same thing: Email is DEAD!

Well…of course it is!

After all…with the great invention of social media no one even uses email anymore.

Right??

Let's look...

With social media...

...you can shoot your brand awareness through the roof.

You can also multiply your inbound traffic by:

- Syndicating your content

- Reach multiple demographics

- Boosting your SEO efforts

It Will Boost Your Conversion Rates:

- Potential customers can see you all over the web (potentially), thus increasing your conversions.

"So really, there's no comparison, right?

Wrong.

It’s time I address this (yet again) and ‘setcha all straight…

This ‘Email Marketing is Dead’ Business is Backed by…No Data at All

The benefits for social media I outlined above do exist. Social does have a significant place in the online marketing ecosphere.

Not only that, the so-called experts have announced the demise of email for years…’email is dead and social media has replaced it’!!

The problem with this argument is the numbers don’t support it:

‘4.1 billion email accounts with over 2.5 billion users and growing. Over 122 billion emails sent every hour’!

…and

Email is almost 40x better at acquiring new customers than Facebook and Twitter.’

Now, a couple of articles don’t slam dunk the argument. But when you look at the sheer numbers it’s hard to ignore.

‘72% of consumers say that email is their favored conduit of communication with companies they do business with. 61% say they like to receive promotional emails weekly and 28% want them even more frequently.’

and…

”66% of consumers have made a purchase online as a direct result of an email marketing message.”

But What About Social Media or The Next Facebook? They're the email killer, right?

Social Media, Facebook, Twitter, etc…are huge, make no mistake. And they play a big part in online communication and interaction. But as it stands at present, they just aren’t effective at DIRECTLY reaching your audience.

Facebook limits who sees your posts because of their updated algorithms…and the only way to get around it is to PAY them. 

So every time you want to reach your audience...yes...that is correct: You have to pay. With email, you do not.

Email Has a Much Higher Chance of Protecting You Against Being Deplatformed

Unless you've been living under your keyboard (or bowl of Fruitloops) you know that the social media giants have been having a field day kicking all sorts of people off their networks for the slightest 'infraction'.

I'm not about to get in to any political diatribe here because #1...I don't care about it. #2...it doesn't matter (whatsoever) for the purposes of this post.

The bottom line is this: when you do NOT control your content you are forever at the mercy of the gatekeepers who do control it, pure and simple.

Email gives you a much better insulation against this ownership and control. Yes, ISP's can boot you. But if that starts happening you have much bigger problems than what is being discussed here.

I get tired of answering this one…but I need to edumicate the uneducated…

Do NOT purchase a junk list to email to. That is not email marketing.

Build your email list correctly. Have people opt in to your list on a blog or landing page to receive VALUE and good solid communication. There are also many new ways to use retargeting and remarketing to get subscribers. Learn how to leverage these.

Aka...go look it up (it's not hard...to find it)

So the next time you say email marketing is dead or email is outdated, go look at the data.
