If you want to create a never-ending stream of ideas for your online business, you should learn how to create a swipe file.
What is a Swipe File?
A swipe file is simple collection of marketing messages that you create from other sources to give you ideas for your own marketing.
It’s a great way to access fresh inspiration and ideas for your online business on a daily basis.
Here’s the Wikipedia definition:
A swipe file is a collection of tested and proven advertising and sales letters. Keeping a swipe file (templates) is a common practice used by advertising copywriters and creative directors as a ready reference of ideas for projects.
The easiest way to start compiling a swipe file is join other marketers’ email lists so you start receiving their emails (TIP: You can join mine!).
Then once you start getting those emails, you file them away at a destination of your choice (more on that in a minute).
Now, if you start collecting every email from every list that you join, your file is going to grow pretty quick and before you know it, you’ll have too much content to wade through for ideas.
So this is what I do:
Every morning I open my email and start going through my inbox. When a subject line catches my eye and makes me want to open it….bam! I file it away. (see video above).
Only focus on the ones that make you want to open them. Otherwise, you’ll quickly have too many emails to go over.
You can put it wherever makes you feel comfortable, but make sure you set up a system where you can do this quickly and not spend a ton of time on it.
– Google Gmail: Gmail is a great place to set up folders, labels and filters for your swipe file. Make it easy to access every morning so you can scan through it quickly.
– Evernote: Not only is Evernote great for saving your swipe file, it is great, period. I do not write anything down on paper anymore. All of my documents, receipts, scribbles and everything that used to go on paper now goes in to my Evernote account. You can start for free too. I highly recommend you start using it.
Other than email, you can also grab ideas from other sources such as:
– Blog Articles
– Social Media Posts
There’s really no limit to where you can find ideas for your swipe file. And let me tell you, every successful online marketer has one. So get to it!
